Get to Know Aloe Vera!

Highlights

Oftentimes it produces unique spikes of coral-red flowers in the spring and late summer. The Aloe Vera can provide your family with a plant that can help treat minor burns and rashes. Caution: While the gel found in the leaves of an Aloe Vera is safe for the skin, the “latex” (a thin layer of yellow juice found just below the outer skin of the aloe vera plant’s leaves) can cause indigestion and irritation if ingested.

Watering

Water your Aloe regularly but only when the soil is completely dry. Make sure to discard remaining water in the pot. Did you know Aloe Vera goes dormant in the winter? During that time you do not have to water it a lot at all, provided it received sufficient water during its growing season.

Sunlight

Your Aloe plant prefers bright indirect light to full sun. Place your Aloe Vera close to a window to make sure it can thrive in the light. Insufficient light will cause the leaves to droop downwards.

Pet-Friendly?

Aloe Vera can be moderately toxic causing mouth irritation and stomach indigestion to humans and pets.

Sad Plant (is your plant dying?)

Its leaves can bend and break if your Aloe is not getting enough light to form stiff, healthy leaves. Move your plant to a brighter spot, or use a fluorescent light to supplement sunshine.
